Saint Laurent is dressed in his red Dalmatic (because he was a Deacon, not a Priest), and is represented with his Grill symbol of his Martyr in his hands. The nun wears a white coat, a sign that she is a Cistercian sister, with a black veil on her head. Difficult to determine who this Nun is, after much research, we were told that there was a Representation where the Archangel handed a Palm to Mafalda of Portugal, but in this case, the Palm that he handed to her was not a Palm of Martyr, but the Palm of Virginity which is the attribute of Saint Mafalda.... Why not? We leave that to everyone's free interpretation, because God knows that there were several Sisters who ended up Martyrs....
This Painting is interesting and original because the Frame and the Painting are one, the decoration of the frame is carved from the same wood as the painted panels, which is really not common. There are cracks where the panels join, but these are the marks of time, and we prefer to leave them.
Slightly naive painting, typical of this late 16th century.
