"Victor Coste (1844-1923) Mussels Fishermen On The Pond Of Berre"
The bucolic and peaceful atmosphere at the start of the day certainly at the edge of the Etang de Berre where the Provençal artist Victor Coste had his habits. Soft, pastel colors which add to the calm of this scene where we see mussel fishermen aboard the flat-bottomed boats endemic to this region, the famous chard, sorting the product of their fishing. The work in good condition is offered in a light carved, gilded wooden frame, which measures 31 cm by 40 cm and 24 cm by 33 cm for the panel alone. It is signed lower right.
A student of Dominique Magaud and Johanny Rave at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, then of François Barry, he participated in the Paris Salon from 1883 to 1896. He also exhibited at the Colonial Exhibition of 1906, specializing in marines. His works are today kept at the Palais Longchamp, at the Granet Museum in Aix en Provence, at the Regards de Provence Foundation as well as at the Cassis Museum.
