Henri ZUBER (1844-1909) Shepherdess and her sheep oil on canvas, monogrammed lower right 32.5x46cm (restoration, notably in the sky on the left) Henri Zuber was born on June 24, 1844 in Alsace, where his grandfather, Jean Zuber, founded a famous wallpaper factory. After studying in Strasbourg then in Paris, he joined the Brest Naval School in 1861 where he met the marine painter Auguste Mayer, whose student he was from 1862 to 1863. His career as a nature painter began extends from 1872 to 1909. Remaining outside the new trends which characterize the second half of the 19th century, a versatile painter practicing watercolor, oil, drawing and pastel with equal joy, Henri Zuber will achieve fame with his landscapes and met with great success among his contemporaries exhibiting each year at the Salon of French Artists where he received numerous awards.
