"Joseph Garibaldi (1863-1941) At The Entrance Of The Old Port Of Marseille"
This is what can be considered a master work of the artist. The most coveted subject for collectors of Marseille painters, the Old Port and the activity that took place there in the 19th century.
At the entrance to the Old Port of Marseille, in the tranquility of the end of the day, on a body of water that the Provençals describe as a "sea of oil", a few people are busy around a schooner, a maritime transport vessel, while others row back to the quay in a Marseille boat. In the background, Fort Saint Jean and the Saint Laurent district with its characteristic church, the Customs buildings and the Old Quarters destroyed during the war.
Joseph Garibaldi presents here a superb testimony of this period, which makes this painting an anecdotal and historical work.
Exceptional in both size and quality, it is presented in a beautiful Louis XIV style gilded frame which measures 118 cm by 151 cm and 97 cm by 130 cm for the canvas alone.
In good condition, it is signed lower right.
A majestic work of very high quality, to come and see at the Gallery because it is much more beautiful in reality than in photos.
Joseph Garibaldi exhibited at the Salon des artistes from 1884 to 1914 where he obtained an honorable mention in 1887 and a second class medal in 1897. These are mainly views of famous sites and monuments, coastal ports: Cassis, where he painted regularly between 1884 and 1899, La Ciotat, where he was welcomed by Antoine Lumière, Bandol, Sanary and Toulon. But its specialty will remain the Old Port of Marseille. Until 1905, he benefited from the patronage of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (1827-1905) who, guided by the critic Paul Leroy, very supportive of Vollon's students, bought his paintings and donated them to provincial museums. He exhibited his landscapes at the Marseille Colonial Exhibition in 1906 and obtained a travel grant for Tunisia in 1907. For the rest of his career he was supported by his friends from the Association of Marseille Artists (Étienne Martin, José Silbert and Édouard Crémieux), successively at the head of the association...
