Superb two-sided gouache very colorful.
This work, signed Thango, is very decorative. The palette very vivid and representative of the style of the artist and the school of Poto-Poto.
This abstract composition or mixes animals, masks and symbols of traditions is quite remarkable.
We find on the back a study, genesis of a future work of art.
Rare document, the gouache is signed on the back of the founder of the Poto-Poto School, Pierre Lods.

François Thango (1936-1981)
François Thango is a Congolese painter born in 1936 in Brazzaville. He lived and worked both in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, where he died in 1981. Thango was a prolific painter who left behind an important artistic legacy.
François Thango was the son of a woman from Cabinda and a Congolese father. He grew up in Brazzaville and studied at the city’s School of Fine Arts. He began painting in the 1950s and exhibited his works for the first time in 1956.
He was one of the first generations of young Congolese painters around Pierre Lods in the very recent painting school of Poto-Poto. In 1958, Lods chose Thango to represent the school of painters of Poto-Poto at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels.
Thango was an influential artist of his time and was often invited to exhibit his works in national and international exhibitions. He also taught art in Brazzaville and had a significant impact on the local art scene.
The artistic style of François Thango can be described as vibrant and colorful. Thango has worked in many different mediums, including oil painting, watercolor and gouache.
Thango’s work is characterized by its expressive style and bright color palette.
The work of François Thango has been widely exhibited during his life, but it has also been presented in posthumous exhibitions. The Musée national d'art moderne de Paris exhibited his works in 1989 and a retrospective exhibition of his work was presented at the Fondation Cartier in 1995.
An internationally renowned painter, François Thango was one of the leaders of the Poto-Poto school.
The attraction for the works of this school is expanding, the coast of these main artists rises. The Poto-Poto school, with its pioneering role in Africa and its very decorative identity, could experience a surge in the near future.
POTO POTO SCHOOL
School of painting founded in Brazzaville in 1950 by the painter Pierre Lods (1921-1988), amateur painter and former military, established in 1950 in Brazzaville, that one owes the foundation of an «African Art Workshop» which will take the name of «School of Poto Poto». Pierre Lods had taken to his service in his residence in Brazzaville several Congolese (cook, driver, launderer, etc.). One of them, Félix Ossiali, takes advantage of the absence of his master to steal his brushes and try himself to paint on canvas. Against all odds, while he comes to surprise him, Pierre Lods encourages him to continue his work until he judges it ended according to his own criteria. Dazzled by the talent of his servant, he undertakes the installation of a structure, a kind of experimental laboratory, intended for Congolese artists with no notion of art history. This is the initial credo: support a purely Congolese artistic creation, free of any relation to Western art that is supposed to distort the essence of the African soul.
This school is at the origin of a current of artistic expression based on the free exploitation of themes drawn from African traditions (market scenes, masks, animals, etc.). It is the genesis of a singular Congolese art center both by its associative mode of operation and by a style of painting illustrated by artists who quickly acquire an international reputation, such as Nicolas Ondongo , François Thango, Marcel Gotene, Jacques Zigoma, François Iloki, Oba, Owassa, Bela, Ngavouka, etc. The Poto-Poto school, which has the status of a private cooperative, is now run by Pierre Claver Ngampio, who succeeded Nicolas Ondongo in 1976.
