Paul-Marie BALIN (1832-1898), was an undisputed master in the art of wallpaper, and filed, between 1866 and 1884, no less than 12 patents linked to the "Embossing" of his papers, imitating velvet, tapestry, silk , brocatelle...and embossed leather ("Spanish leather").
The paper (with two different patterns) which adorns the front and back of this superb 5-panel screen, is or is not from the presses of "Paul Balin & Cie"... Perhaps this is a production of the one of his competitors, against whom he was lost in recurring lawsuits (Bezault & Pattey in 1876, Danois, Frémont & Durrant in 1878, then DESFOSSES, Josse, ZUBER, HOOK brothers, Lhoest, DULUD, Vitry...). .. You would have to take it apart to find strong paper on the back, a number or a name, I don't have the skills! ..
However, this rare paper is of superb quality, very thick (which we called "cardboard -leather" at the time), with a strongly marked relief..., and presents no less than NINE different shades, not counting the GOLD on the background...: so many passes under the presses...! ...a luxury product!
Two different patterns, imitating Cordoba leather, adorn the front and back of its five panels: exotic birds and colorful butterflies evolve and nest within the twining vines of a green, flowery EDEN, bursting with tasty fruits. ..
The edges are trimmed with braid and threads formerly purple and gold, as well as brass ornamental nails in the corners.
