Here we have the meeting of secular Japanese iconography, of the child with fish (bringing good luck/abundance) and European Art Deco.
Indeed, from 1890 the study of classical sculpture became the absolute norm in Japan. This is one of the aspects of the Westernization process of the Meiji era - French art prevailed until around 1940. Japanese artists thus created in an Art Nouveau then Art Deco vein.
They were able to create their own universe distant from centuries-old traditional Japanese art.
Goishi NAKANO belonged to the “Keizai-sha”, the first secular sculpture group in Japan (1927 to 1943). His works always have a duality between European tradition and modernity.
