Biography
by A. M. Comanducci ediz 1962
Born in Turin August 8, 1858, died there October 6, 1936. He was a pupil of Andrea Gastaldi and Enrico Gamba at the Accademia Albertina. A good draughtsman and colorist, he handled with skill the portrait, genre painting, landscape and oriental motifs, executed during a long stay of his on places. He presented his first painting, a
"Portrait of a Man," at the 1884 Turin Exposition. In 1887 he exhibited five paintings in Venice: "The Miners," a vast painting; "Beside the Fire"; "After a Downpour"; "Late Autumn" and "Valle d'Antrana." In 1891 he went to Egypt for the first time and sent a few studies from there: the Civic Museum of Turin purchased "Han Halil" and some time later a painting of an Italian subject, "Porto Corsini near Ravenna." From 1891 to 1914 Rossi spent part of the year in Egypt, taking part in Exhibitions with many works, and bringing back a gold medal as a prize.
In 1928 he resumed his way to the East and visited Greece, Turkey, Syria and Palestine. Many of his works are scattered in foreign private collections; four were purchased by the King, one by his mother the Duchess of Genoa.
