In his youth he settled in Paris where he worked as a textile designer. Of a mystical and gnostic temperament, he immersed himself in Vêdânta and was deeply interested in all religions including Christianity and Islam. Reader and correspondent of the French metaphysician René Guénon, he went to Cairo in 1938 and 1939 to meet him. After the Second World War, Schuon, who resided in Lausanne, undertook several trips to North America, to meet the traditional Plains Indians, in Morocco and in several European countries. His written work includes more than twenty books translated into numerous languages and constitutes a true metaphysical and spiritual sum without equivalent in the twentieth century. He develops and largely explains the theme of the “Transcendent Unity of Religions” and the necessary “esoteric” understanding of them as an antidote to contemporary nihilism. His lesser known pictorial and poetic work shows all the richness of his astonishing personality.
