Rare Cilice Object of devotion from the 18th Century Rare cilice, 18th century Composed of a braid of iron mesh fitted with points on a strip of blue silk Strips of beige fabric at each end; rust spots, wear on the tang. A cilice is a sort of belt, in this case with metal spikes that penetrate the flesh. It is used as part of a religious practice which consists of voluntarily imposing suffering on oneself in order to better turn to one's faith. Exceedingly rare object of curiosity....
