Born in Lisbon, he is better known under the name Augusto Barros, known as “Barros” or also called “the Portuguese” by his painter friends in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He exhibited for the first time in his country then, with a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation which supported his work, he first went to Germany in 1961 and settled two years later in Paris. He is irresistibly attracted by this Paris, center of the arts, but also by this “bohemian” Paris, which exudes freedom. At the Le Divan gallery he met the Russian painter Serge Poliakoff, of whom he became a great friend. He frequented Mondrian, Man Ray as well as the surrealist Max Ernst, the Delaunays and his compatriot Vieira da Silva, as well as her husband, the painter Arpad Szenes.
