Statuette of a Young Stag
Hellenistic Period, 2nd-1st century BC
H. 11 cm
L. 9 cm
Visible missing parts
Green marble base

The iconography of the stag and doe is attested in Greco-Roman antiquity. The precise and sensitive modeling of our piece can be compared to the classical and Hellenistic models, close to the living form. Notable examples include the statuette of a doe in the Archaeological Museum of Athens, the young stag in the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris, and the iconic pair of roe deer discovered in Herculaneum and housed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

Our elegantly posed animal has been meticulously stippled to depict its fur. A beautiful nuanced archaeological patina and some missing parts attest to the antiquity of the statuette.
