Polychrome terracotta statuette by Joseph Félon, representing a naked woman languid on a bed. Similar to an odalisque, lying on her stomach, her left leg folded, she seems to be waking up. According to our research, this work by Joseph Félon was most likely exhibited at the Salon of Painting and Sculpture of 1866 as an allegory of Vanity. Although treated in an academic manner, a surprising concern for realism, especially visible in the polychromy, was carried out by the artist. Visible in the model's complexion, nipples or pubic hair, Joseph Félon's attention to detail reveals the artist's desire to represent a certain reality. Perhaps the aesthetic tensions of the era subject to the reign of academicism and its restrictive formalism are expressed in this work.
