Object description :

"Directory-consulate Period: Beautiful Clock With Faun Heads."
Rare chiseled bronze and patinated bronze clock from the end of the 18th century in the shape of a covered vase in which the dial is inscribed. Capped with a gilded bronze lid decorated with a frieze of laurel leaves and a pine cone grip, the vase rises on four thin, long twisted stems ending in goat's hooves. The heads of fauns, on either side, simulate the coves. A finely chiseled snake with an arrowhead tongue decorates the front of the patinated bronze base.
It is accompanied, on each side, by a leonine head. Counter-base in gilded bronze set with a delicately fluted ring. The whole rests on four rave feet.

In ancient Greece, the snake was the protective animal of the house. This position developed its symbolism of fertility and survival. The origin of this symbolism comes from the serpent on the caduceus of Asclepius, god of Medicine. The latter, revered by the Greeks and having the power to resurrect the dead, was executed by Zeus.

Very good state of conservation.
Original mercury gilding.
Movement in perfect working order, serviced by an art watchmaker.
Complete with its key and its pendulum.

Directoire-Consulate period, circa 1795-1800
