The present polychrome terracotta depicts the traditional iconography of the Immaculate Conception, emblem of the virginal assumption and the doctrine of salvation. The Madonna, recognizable thanks to the manifest ecstatic attitude and the blue mantle night that characterizes it, memory of the Byzantine maphorion, rises above leaden clouds; surround the turbine, driven by the wind, some heads of putto. At the feet of the Virgin there is, rolled up in a resting position, a creature with a reptilian body and a canid head that clenches in the jaws a spherical body, plausibly an apple or a pomegranate. The traditional iconography codifying this image is to be traced back to the Apocalypse (Rev. 12,1): the woman dressed in the sun who appears in a dream to the prophet casts a crescent moon in the text, but often in the figurative arts there is also a snake, by virtue of the underlying salvific symbolism. The creature at the feet of this Virgin would therefore represent the Evil that, defeated, returns the prize of eternal life. 

Composed to favour a frontal and lateral view, this polychrome terracotta reveals a miniaturistic attention not only for the careful processing of minute details, but also for the soft color rendering, nuanced in its various gradations.
