Giovanni Ospitali was born in Marzabotto (Bologna) on 26 October 1927. He lives and works in Florence. He began painting in Bologna under the guidance of Prof. Giuseppe Rivali, art critic of the "Avvenire d´Italia", who, noting a particular predisposition for the watercolour technique, advised him to acquire a specialisation in this field.
In 1949, he moved to Florence, where he frequented local artistic circles, refining his technique and craft, without, however, changing any particular themes and painting styles, on the contrary, becoming aware of his inability to adhere to prevailing schools and movements.
In the 1950s-1960s, his production was almost totally absorbed by foreign markets (mainly the United States of America and Canada).
From 1960 onwards, he also devoted himself to oil painting, although he favoured watercolour.
His watercolour painting stands out from the mass for a particular characteristic, based on the timbral and ringing vibration of the colours.
He likes to portray the historical centres of Tuscany, his beloved Florence, Pistoia, Paris, Naples and wherever his gaze has fallen to celebrate a place worthy of being captured and immortalised.
