Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher - Paris, 18th Century"

PICHET in pewter, with shoulder, high plinth foot, straight cup and thumbscrew with molded crest.
Hallmarking:
1° - Gauging: arms of Paris / 1732.
2° - Control at the nave (poorly affixed).
3° - Hallmark of Pierre Servais CAGNY received master in 1784: hammer crowned with a bird / (P).SC / P.
Height: 19.5 cm.
PARIS, End of the 18th century

Good condition, a few scratches are noted.
Note that this 1732 vintage gauge is still used at the end of the century.
The aim of checking the gauging of the pitchers was to check whether the pitcher complied with regulations and was suitable for service in order to ensure “Good measure” to the consumer.
It is not uncommon to note that for example the bottom could be forced and made concave by a consumer to slightly increase the capacity, or conversely made convex by the owner of the drinking establishment to reduce the capacity...
