These very beautiful andirons represent the pair of statues adorning the tomb of a Medici (Sculptor: Michelangelo).
A strong symbolism is associated with these statues, four in number (the four parts of time). T
he late Julien de Nemours rests in this tomb. The particularity of these andirons is their positioning on a box base. The original statues are on a broken double-arched pediment, this curved base is for example reproduced in the Barbedienne andirons on the same subject.
For our andirons this gives an appearance closer to ornamental statuary.
