"Church Cruets In Silver And Bronze Tray, France 19th Century "
The set is made up of a gilt bronze cruet tray and a pair of gilt silver cruets. The top is multi-lobed, elongated, has teeth, with a central depression, the edge is decorated with a frieze of curls. On the edge, the chiseled ornamentations are composed of vine branches and aquatic plant leaves. These motifs are separated by four circular medallions engraved and screwed, dedicated to the Evangelists. Each is occupied by a bust of the Evangelist accompanied by his symbol: an ox's head for Saint Luke, a head of an angel or a winged man for Saint Matthew, a lion's head for Saint Mark and an eagle's head for Saint Jean, who holds a pen in his hand. The central part is decorated with a trefoil cross, it is equipped with two projecting, attached, screwed members which allow the hollow foot of the cruets to be fitted into it. Pair of cruets with gilded silver lids with circular ogee feet and embossed ovoid bodies on which a different guilloche decoration is chiseled on each of them. On the wine cruet: vines with bunches of grapes in relief and on the water cruet: bouquets of rushes. The spout is flared and has high curved edges. The attached handle has a vegetal winding.
