"Portrait Of A Young Man, Louis XV Period"
Portrait of a young man, slightly three-quarter length, with blue eyes, wearing a long curly, powdered wig. Oil on cardboard annotated on the reverse in pen "painted by R.Gardelle in 1751" and at the top left in graphite "O en 3 Aug 1751". Robert Gardelle (1692-1766), is a Genevan painter, portraitist and engraver of the 18th century. He produced various portraits including that of Frederick II, then, to improve his skills, he went to Paris where he became a student of Largillière, whose portraits he made copies of. Back in 1713, in Geneva, he specialized in portraiture. He attracted a large clientele and often made duplicates of the portraits he produced in reduced size. Our portrait is served by a very beautiful asymmetrical frame in carved and gilded wood. Louis XV Period, 18th Century
