Brother of the famous artist Eugène, Ernest worked for Théodore Deck from 1886 until the master's death in 1891. In 1908, the year of his death, he became head of the Sèvres decoration workshop. His art was fully in line with the trends of his time, inspired by the observation of nature and Japanese art. The vase we present is characteristic of the collaboration between the two artists and of the importance of Japonism at the end of the 19th century.
A similar model is reproduced on p.91 of French Art Nouveau ceramics by Paul Arthur, published by Norma.
