Born on January 30, 1898, in Novočerkassk and from an early age showed an extraordinary aptitude for drawing and painting. Encouraged by his father, a surgeon, he is placed in the care of a local painter. He graduated from the Rostov art high school and then moved to Kiev, where he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1916, called to arms, he is forced to interrupt his studies. Wounded and taken prisoner first by the Austrians and then by the British, he managed to escape to Bulgaria, to Sofia, where he began attending the Academy of Fine Arts. He obtained an American scholarship and in 1925 came to Italy, to Milan (he resides at 114 Viale Abruzzi), where he attended the School of Painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. During his years at the Academy he met the painter Julia Ivanovna Lund (1905-1974), of Norwegian origin but born in Russia, who became his wife in 1930 and by whom they had three children. He died on July 6, 1970, in Milan.
