Rare Portrait of Gabriel François de Brueys made in 1765 in Léogane in Saint Domingue by Calongne. Watercolor treated in miniature, in its 18th century frame, 11.5 x 9 cm. On the back, old annotations mention the name of the model, the date, the location and the name of the artist Calongne.

 “Gabriel-François de Brueys Baron d'Aigalliers, Son of Gabriel, born in Uzès on February 28, 1743, Deputy Major of the Forest Regiment, Painted in 1765 in Léogane on the Island of Saint-Domingue, By his friend Calongne ”. Born on February 28, 1743, Gabriel François de Brueys d'Aigalliers descends from a family of gents originating from Nîmes (Gard) ennobled in the 15th century. Destined for a military career at a very young age, Gabriel François joined the Forez regiment as a volunteer. He participated in the German campaign in 1761 and stayed notably in Santo Domingo between 1764 and 1767. Discouraged by slow and laborious advancement, he retired with the rank of major in 1785. Disappointed by military life, he turned his interests in intellectual activities. Inspired by his numerous readings, he took up his pen to write down his thoughts, compose fables, essays and small plays. He became friends with people of letters and became a member of several academies and literary societies and joined Freemasonry. On March 30, 1789, he was elected deputy of the nobility to the Estates General by the Seneschal of Nîmes and Beaucaire (Gard). He adopted a moderate position and was very little involved in revolutionary events. He retired to Gard at the end of his mandate and became mayor of Uzès (Gard) in December 1793. He resigned from his position less than a year after his election for health reasons and left political life to pursue his career. devote to managing his affairs and writing. Married in 1797, Gabriel François de Brueys d'Aigalliers died without issue on April 25, 1806 in Nîmes.
