Jean Jules Salmson (1823 – 1902) was a prestigious French sculptor of the 19th century, famous for his bronze works of exceptional quality. Salmson specialized in depicting orientalist subjects, for which he is best known. Yet his repertoire was vast and Salmson also cast statues of great historical figures such as Shakespeare, Rubens, Hamlet and Byron. Salmson trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under French sculptors Jules Ramey, Armand Toussaint and Auguste Dumont. From 1859, Salmson exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and worked on various Parisian monuments including those of the Opera, the Tuileries and the Commercial Court.
