David-Eugène Girin entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 1864, where he immediately joined Joseph Guichard's class. He took part in the Salon, exhibiting genre scenes and still lifes, notably floral compositions. In 1887, with his painting Le Matin, the artist marked a decisive turning point in his career: although he had previously been known for his genre paintings, he now devoted himself exclusively to landscape and outdoor scenes. His financial stability enabled him to travel throughout France, exploring a wide variety of subjects. This new phase is also reflected in his stylistic evolution, where he combines a powerful, uncluttered drawing with a palette dominated by light earth tones and subtly colored whites.
