Object description :

"Early 18th Century Cane, With “vinaigrette”, “pommander”, Perfume, Medicine System"
Rare cane from the very beginning of the 18th century. The pommel unscrews to place a ball of scent, a literary translation of the word “pommander”. Small holes allow you to smell the perfume. Doctors of the time believed in its disinfectant effect. In any case, it helped to cope with the nauseating odors. A similar model is presented in Catherine Dike's reference work “system canes, a fabulous and little-known world”, page 202 photo 23/10. A slight crack visible on the top of the pommel. The barrel is made of rush. The metal ferrule. The entire cane measures 36,61 inches. France, very early 18th century.
