This large sculpture of SAINT PIERRE is a 19th century work in the style of the Master of Rabenden, active in the 16th century.
The works of this Master are always of strong creative power and convey an impression of volume.
The characters with sculpted figures have great expressiveness which is reinforced by the eyes and the heavy lines of the eyebrows.
These characteristics are richly represented in this very well crafted sculpture.
Saint Peter represented here, dressed in heavy clothes with marked folds, holds the Book in one hand.
His other hand, missing, held the keys. He is wearing a richly carved tiara.
A serenity emerges from this sculpture, increased by its great size.
In good condition, with missing one hand, slight slit in the back and loose tiara cord.
Comes from a large private collection.
