Anton Sipos (Bosnian) "Abstract composition" Gouache signed lower left and dated 68 Dimensions 41 x 54 cm Parisian period 1968. Born in 1938 in Bosnia, the central mountainous region of Yugoslavia, his hypnotic interest in drawing began manifested from an early age. This deep attachment and this love story never left him. Drawing was the anchor of his agitated and troubled life. He left home as a teenager and supported himself as a film animation artist. His very first work, “Surrogate” (1961), won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film under the direction of the great Yugoslav animator Dushon VuKotic. Working freelance for film studios never took him away from his painting. He eventually gave up the repetitive and boring work of animation to devote himself to plein air painting. This is what pushed him to become an impressionist. In 1964, his secret dream of living in Montmartre and studying with French artists at the École de Paris came true. His paintings from this period are exhibited in the largest galleries in Europe. He exhibits each year at the Salon d'artistes français at the Grand Palais and at the Salon d'Automne. He made numerous trips to Europe and painted regularly in Italy. He created several paintings of the south of France, Provence and the Côte d'Azur. He painted Giverny and the cathedrals of Rouen. He produced some of the most memorable street scenes of old Paris and the Seine. In 1970, Mr. Sipos arrived in Los Angeles where he painted scenes of Los Angeles and San Diego Harbor, never submitting to market pressures. He often worked as an artist for the film industry. His superb classical training earned him a contract with the Eleanor Ettinger Studio in New York to work for Norman Rockwell transposing his original oils onto lithographic plates. His first major New York exhibition was at the Jasper Gallery on 57th Street in 1977. Shortly after Rockwell's death, Mr. Sipos returned to Los Angeles where he continued his prolific work on paintings depicting his family, as well as nostalgic reminiscences of Europe, in particular of Paris. His unique impressionistic vision was furthered by his wanderlust which led him to return to Europe and spend extended stays in Mexico, New England and the American West. In 1984, he found work as an artistic illustrator with his friend Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky and landed a small role alongside Natasja Kinsky and Robert Mitchum in the film Maria's Lovers. He was more interested in drawing the film crew than in acting. The last ten years of the artist's life are those when his work is the most prolific and mature. He retires to his studio west of Los Angeles. Some of the greatest art dealers and collectors are invited to his studio. His new palette blossoms in rich, vibrant colors like never before. Bright yellows, oranges, reds and blues dominate. Everything under the sun becomes the subject of his paintings: the California coast from Carmel to La Jolla, portraits of his family and friends.
