"Monk At The Foot Of A Giant Buddha At Angkor "
Remarkable drawing representing a monk meditating at the foot of one of the giant heads of Buddha at Angkor. This site, with its majesty and unparalleled serenity, fascinated traveling artists, such as Paul Jouve and André Maire, at the beginning of the 20th century. Renée Jullien (Paris 1903- Aix-en-Provence 1999) was the first woman to receive the Grand Prix de Rome in 1923 (the second, after Pierre Dionisi who received the first). In particular, in 1937, she illustrated a book Yun Nan Fou the city of clouds, which suggests that she traveled to Cambodia at the beginning of the 1930s. We cannot help but notice the proximity of the style of this drawing with that of André Maire, which augurs a possible meeting. The design being double-sided, it is presented on spinners so that you can enjoy both as you wish. It comes from the sale of the workshop, following his death in Aix-en-Provence. It is placed in a Delft frame, with red and gold tones from the 50s.
