Chair with headband
Beech imitation mahogany
Painted headband
Dimensions : H. ; W. ; D. (cm.)
Paris, circa 1790
Chair on tapered ringed front legs and sabre-shaped back legs. The seat is moulded and girdled, and the connecting dice are decorated with flowers. The sides of the backrest are cut. The curved headband is decorated with a very rare antique painted scene.
This chair can be compared with a small number of mahogany, beech or walnut chairs with painted entablature. These include armchairs and chairs commissioned around 1790 for the Crown and in the flats of Consul Lebrun in the Tuileries in 1800, as well as a suite of four armchairs delivered for the Count de Kerry's private residence in the Rue d'Artois.
This model was particularly popular at the end of the 18th century, as can be seen from a number of paintings. These include
- The portrait of Mlle Duplant, 1793, by François André Vincent (Gulbekian Foundation)
- The portrait of Joachim Le Breton, 1795, by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard (Neslon Atkins Museum)
- The famous ‘two young friends kissing’, circa 1789 - 1793, by Louis-Léopold Boilly (Musée Cognac-Jay)
