Object description :

"17th Century Italian School, Roman Charity"
COD: 0851
Great Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil artwork on canvas depicting a subject taken from a story by the Roman historian Valerio Massimo. It is a story of an exemplary woman, Pero, who secretly breastfeeds her father, Cimone, imprisoned and sentenced to death by starvation. She is discovered but her act of generosity so impresses the officials that they release her father. It represents a great act of pietas (filial generosity) and Roman honor. Painting from the Neapolitan school and of excellent pictorial quality, which can be seen in particular in the creation of the flesh tones and the use of the chiaroscuro technique to make the figures emerge from the darkness of the background. Elegant antique non-coeval frame in carved and gilded wood, with small gaps and minor gilding losses (see photo). Artwork that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some small points. Overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 115 x W 87 cm.
