"Rare Ulysse Nardin Pocket Watch , Corps Of Engineers, Usa, 1918"
Rare pocket watch from the prestigious "Ulysse Nardin" manufacture, issued to the United States Corps of Engineers during the First World War, circa 1918.

10,000 of these silver-cased pocket watches were ordered by the AEF from 1918 to 1920, for use by the Corps of Engineers. The main suppliers of non-chronographs were Zenith and Ulysse Nardin, while Vacheron & Constantin supplied the majority of chronographs.
The British and French governments made the arrival of American engineers their top priority after the United States entered the “Great War” in April 1917. The Americans responded quickly. By the end of August 1917, nine newly organized railway engineering regiments, recruited largely from the country's private railway workers, along with the 1st Division's engineering regiment, had crossed the Atlantic and arrived in France .
Many railway regiments were initially attached to British or French military formations. It was while serving in the British southwest of Cambrai, France, on September 5, 1917, that Sergeant Matthew Calderwood and Private William Branigan of the 11th Engineers were wounded by artillery fire, resulting in caused the first casualties of all US Army units serving at the front. in Europe.
The thousands of engineer soldiers who served in France in 1917 and 1918 contributed to support efforts both on the front line and behind. Combat engineers built bridges, roads, and narrow-gauge railroads on or immediately behind the front. The forestry troops of the 20th Engineers produced approximately 200 million feet of wood in France.
Other engineering troops expanded French port facilities, built more than 20 million square feet of storage space, and built 800 miles of standard gauge rail lines. Technically trained engineers organized the U.S. Army's first armored units and developed chemical warfare munitions and defensive equipment.
