Mikazuki MASK from the Nō THEATER
Signed on the inside
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1945)
Wood and pigments
H. 21 cm, W 15 cm

A monoxyle wooden face mask, enhanced with polychrome pigments, representing Mikazuki, a vengeful spirit wishing to find peace.

His eyes and lips are highlighted in red, and his half-open mouth reveals small gold teeth - the same colours used for the circles around his pupils. His eyebrows, moustache and soul patch are finely painted, so that each hair is individually presented. His hair, with the same pigmentation, is drawn in a straight line across the forehead.

The inside is blackened and bears a signature stamp.
