Our research led us towards Callet and Challes, Flore's face quite naturally stopped our choice for Callet. The painting bears an old but reported signature, François Boucher, lower right Antoine-

François Callet (1741-1823)

Antoine-François Callet won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1764 with Cléobis and Biton driving their mother's chariot to the temple of Juno. The artist, well known as a portraitist, is also a great painter of History and mythological subjects. He was also received at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1781 with an allegorical canvas after having been approved there in 1779 with his portrait of the Count of Artois. He made a trip to Italy and on this occasion painted a remarkable ceiling at the Spinola Palace in Genoa (the apotheosis of Ambroise Spinola). He participated in the creation of large decorations at Versailles (Dawn, France saved or allegory of 18 Brumaire 1801 - coronation room, the allegory of the battle of Austerlitz 1806...), in Luxembourg, at the Louvre (Cybele crowned by Flore and Zéphyre-we can admire this work in the Apollon gallery)...He obtained numerous orders from private individuals for the decoration of their private mansions without forgetting his own hotel, which has now disappeared, which he had built in 23 rue du Montparnasse. Antoine-François Callet died in Paris on October 2, 1823.
