"French School (1830s) - Portrait Of Bourgeois"
- Oil on canvas. - Excellent French bourgeois portrait from around 1830 which perfectly represents the rise of the new bourgeois classes of the Restoration. With a costume completely different from that of the end of the 18th century, with the wig and the court costume completely abandoned in favor of the frock coat, certain conventions are maintained such as the baton of command, now devoid of any military lexicon, or even the background with a curtain and a column in memory of the ancient aristocracy. The character represented, probably a citizen enriched through commercial or banking activities, is shown to us at the height of his civil, social and economic power. It is not difficult to imagine this character going to the theater or opera with other members of his class to listen to the romantic tragedies of Bellini or Donizetti, or a Rossinian comedy. It's a fascinating era, whose inhabitants were introduced to wigs and jackets, but will probably die after taking photos. The universe is growing by leaps and bounds thanks to technology and science, and members of a new social class with values that break with everything previously known are adorning themselves with portraits like this one . - Dimensions of the unframed image: 78 x 96 cm / 98 x 113 cm with a magnificent period frame. - Comes from a private collection in Bordeaux. - Good condition.
