"Large Italian Box / Cassone Lacquered And Gilded"
Large Italian lacquered box / Cassone lacquered and gilded. Period late 16th / early 17th century. This stuccoed and lacquered box rests on four flattened scrolled feet. It is molded and carved with gadroons at its base, glyphs around the edge of the lid and a winged cherub's head on the front. The interior is compartmentalized and notably has scrolled partitions. It has retained its original lacquer. The lock and hinges are attached. The lock is functional and equipped with a key. The cassone is a ceremonial wedding box or chest. It allowed the bride to store the precious objects forming all or part of her dowry. This storage chest was one of the essential elements of furniture until the end of the 16th century before being gradually supplanted by the chest of drawers. Dimensions: L 52 x D 40 x H 25
