Whim with historical scene

Oil on canvas, cm 66 X 84

With frame, cm 74 x 91

The work, an oil on canvas, depicts a scene that refers to the history of ancient Rome, as suggested by the classical setting. In the foreground is, in fact, a hexastyle Doric temple which is accessed via a staircase. In the background you can see an obelisk and other buildings that fade into the sky. refer to the imagination of Rome, such as the monument characterized by arches reminiscent of the Colosseum or the Theatre of Marcellin.

A multitude of men, women, and even children act before the temple, and weapons are piled up in the proscenium. The architectural setting is the result of the imagination of the painter who masterfully assembles several buildings, but it is plausible that the artist wanted to recreate the splendor of ancient Imperial Rome and stage the festival called Armilistrium. This festival was suitable for the consecration and purification of weapons and armor and used to take place in front of the temple of Mars Ultor, that is avenger, because wanted by Augustus following the Battle of Philippi in which he avenged Caesar, defeating Brutus and Cassius. During the festivities that took place in October and March, the priests Salii (priestly college that marked the military time from the civil and vice versa, voted to Mars), transported the twelve sacred shields called Ancili processionally in the city.

Stylistically, the work is flanked by the paintings of Jacob Van Hal, born in Antwerp in 1672 was formed at the local guild of San Luca. He was appointed Master from 1691 to 1692 and then Dean from 1705 to 1706.

In order to understand the stylistic closeness of the present with Van Hal, let us observe Storia di S.Maria in Aracoeli in Rome, but also the two versions portraying classical and Bacchanal subjects, all of which are in private collection, in which, in addition to a similar approach to classical architecture, the resumption of some types of characters and their poses, suggesting that the mode of work of the artist was based on the resumption of some styles proposed several times in different works.
