Painting, oil on canvas, representing the interior of Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral, signed at the bottom in PG Rigaud 1927. the painter looks at the architecture of the end of the transept and the beginning of the double ambulatory. The work shows the interior ambulatory made up of columns with quadripartite ribbed vaults. Vaults are common to ambulatories and chapels. In the background we can see the stained glass window of one of the seven radiating chapels of the cathedral. In the foreground, on the left, a faithful woman holds a chair and prepares to pray near the choir enclosure. Above her, we can see part of the two hundred sculptures which make up the choir tower. Pierre Gaston Rigaud was born on August 4, 1874 in Bordeaux and died in Paris in 1939. Post-impressionist. He is a painter of seascapes, landscapes, church interiors but also a pastellist. Student of Albert Maignan and Bonnat. Since 1907 he has exhibited at the Salon of French Artists, at the Salon des Indépendants then at the Salon d'Automne and finally at the Tuileries. He won a silver medal at the Salon of French Artists in 1920 then a gold medal in 1923. After painting numerous Basque landscapes, Brittany, Corsica and Venice, he specialized for 20 years in the interiors of cathedrals. . He likes to play with the effects of light on the columns and particularly on the stained glass windows. His paintings appear in numerous French museums as well as in private collections.
