The poet and the fame
Polychrome terracotta, cm alt. 34
The elegant polychrome terracotta sculpture group depicts what seems to be the fame that raises a poet, almost represented in fall on soft and dense clouds The figure of the crowned fame, characterized by colorful wings and a garland of flowers in the hair, supports and gently wraps the figure placed in front of him that observes him intensely and with a surprised air. The refined sculpture is enriched by the figures of cupids and the faces of cherubim emerging from the white clouds. Note the presence of the dog, quietly asleep on a green flowered lawn, careless It is striking the marked and elegant decorativism, the careful attention to detail and the rendering of the draperies, meticulously defined in the individual folds.
The composition is undeniably peculiar to the Fame that crowns a poet preserved in the National Museum of Palazzo Venezia, in Maissen porcelain created by Michel-Victor Acier, (Versailles, 1736 - Dresden, 1799) French sculptor and ceramist. The specimen is flanked by another composition depicting the Fame elevated by pegasus.
Michel-Victor Acier studied sculpture at the Académie Royale in Paris under the guidance of Etienne M. Falconet and Louis Claude Vassé, where he made various statues for a church in Burgundy, but his main activities were as a porcelain modeler. In 1759 he competed for the Grand Prix de sculpture of the ex-École Académique, after which he specialized in smaller plastic art. In 1764 he was invited to Meissen as Modellmeister (master modeller) of the royal manufactory.
