Tobacco pot (without lid), salt stoneware,Alsace Popular Art Betschdorf? Ransbach? 19th century.
Astonishing relief decoration in appliques on 2 registers: -on the lower frieze: in appliques, cartouches presenting Napoleon under a canopy, with crowned lions interspersed; -on the high frieze: Napoleon, surrounded by birds of different sizes.
Two side buttons, for grip or hanging, with a spiral decoration in relief. Below, inscription with a nail on 3 lines: "Johann Jos (Joseph?) Günter von? Ransburg, or Ransbury? (or Ransbach, Westerwald region) and a date difficult to decipher.
After research, perhaps a German potter having worked in Beschdorf, and coming from the Westerwald region
Dimensions: 17.8 cm high x 16.8 cm wide with the side buttons (12.5 cm diameter for the pot)
