Portrait By Mathilde Curot-barberel - Pastel 19th Early 20th 80x64 on View Original Frame Mathilde Curot-Barberel, born in Paris and active in 1880-1905, was a miniaturist and pastellist. She exhibited from 1880 to the French Artists and at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1898. She also worked on porcelain. She exhibited in the provinces and abroad and received numerous medals: in Boulogne, silver medal in Tunis, the same at the international exhibition in Aix, vermeil medal in Reims, silver medal at the feminist exhibition from Paris ; she exhibited again in Le Havre in 1905 (pastels). In 1905 she lived in Paris, avenue de Villers, 45, and gave lessons in her workshop. She received the Academic Palms. Although she made numerous contemporary portraits, she sometimes translated famous paintings into miniatures. This is the case here with the resumption of the double portrait by Madame Elisabeth Vigée of two of the three children of Queen Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI, Madame Royale and the First Dauphin Louis Joseph Xavier François de France (October 22, 1781- 4 June 1789), holding a bird's nest. Aline Boulian was a student of Jean-Jacques Henner and Carolus-Duran, official painters who founded, in 1874, the Atelier des Dames, an art school open to women. In fact, these women artists were not admitted to take courses at the School of Fine Arts before 1897. One of her students, Marie-Louise Curot-Barberel, best known as a portrait painter and miniaturist, exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes French.
