"Large Charles Valton Bronze Sculpture Two Lionesses Animal Sculptor 19th"
Large animal sculpture in bronze with brown patina representing two lionesses (large model), signed C. Valton*, from the 19th century. This sculpture is in good condition and is of exceptional quality. It is very decorative. Signed on the terrace. Note: some slight wear over time on the patina, see photos. *Charles Valton (1851-1918): Animal sculptor, student of Barye and Frémiet, familiar with the Jardin des Plantes from the age of fifteen, exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1868 to 1914, initially plasters and some waxworks then, from 1880, almost exclusively small groups in bronze, often associated with other materials. Most of them are wild animals, especially lions or lionesses. Despite the multiplicity of subjects exhibited at the Salon, it does not appear that these works were the subject of abundant editions. A few Valton bronzes, however, appear in public sales or in antique dealers. (excerpt from Les Bronzes du XIXème siècle by P. Kjellberg) Artist very well rated on Artprice.
