Jean HÉLION (real name Jean Bichier), is a painter of the French school born April 21, 1904 in Couterne (Orne) and died in Paris on October 27, 1987. He first turned to architecture and then devoted himself fully to painting in the 1920s alongside Piet Mondrian, Théo Van Doesburg and Fernand Léger. His style quickly moved towards abstraction while retaining a cubist tendency. It was at the end of the 1930s that, unusually, Jean Hélion painted more and more in a figurative style. His stay in New York was a point of no return towards figuration even though he had just introduced, like several other pioneering artists, abstract art to the United States. He participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions, in France and abroad. Since March and until August 18, 2024, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris is offering a very beautiful retrospective exhibition of the work of this great artist. He is today considered the precursor of the new Fauves in Germany and the figurative works of the 1980s. This beautiful work from the 1970s, a watercolor on paper, depicts a still life in tones specific to the artist's palette. She was present at the exhibition which was dedicated to her from December 1996 to February 1997 at the Ladies' Abbey in Caen and entitled “Jean Hélion as far as the eye can see”.
