"Léty Hippolyte (1878 – 1959) – The Red Sail – Oil On Cardboard – Workshop Stamp "
Small painting representing a boat in front of a town silhouetted against a rocky coast. The red sail of the boat immediately catches the eye. The rocks are reflected in the water, while in the background, a cliff emerges from the mist. These colored elements seem to emerge from the sky and the uniformly blue water, in a worked paste which evokes both mist and absolute calm. A serene atmosphere emerges from this small painting. It is not signed, but the workshop stamp of Hyppolite Léty appears on the back.
The work is presented in a modern black and white wooden frame, which highlights it perfectly. The whole is in excellent condition.
The artist
Hyppolite Léty was born in Vienne (Isère), into a modest family. He began an apprenticeship as a plasterer-painter but turned to artistic painting at a very young age. He was first a student of Bonnardel in Lyon, before going to Paris. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1894 to 1914 and won a gold medal there. He then went to Tourcoing, where he was a professor at the School of Fine Arts for 27 years. However, he often returns to his hometown, where he will settle down to spend his retirement. Léty will often paint the Rhône, its misty and blue atmospheres, such as that of the work we are offering here.
His works have been the subject of numerous public sales in France.
