Courbet - Oil On Canvas - Fontainebleau Forest

Lovely 19th century painting by COURBET which represents a woman carrying bundles of firewood through the rocks of the Fontainebleau forest, more precisely at a place called gorge-aux-loups.

This oil was sold for 5,500 euros (i.e. approximately 7,000 euros including fees) on 07-12-2010, lot 38, by ADER, reputable auctions house in Paris, which described the work as follows :

"Will be included under Courbet's environment section in the catalogue raisonne by Courbet and his collaborators, to appear under the direction of Jean-Jacques Fernier and published by the Wildenstein Institute"
"The scene evokes, in a landscape of rocks, characteristics of the forest of Fontainebleau, on the side of Marlotte in Autumn, the passage of a bundle of fagots under the last rays of the sun Courbet frequented between 1849-1853, his friends Francis and Marie Wey (writer of Comtoise origin) from whom we know that he took his walks in the area forest of Fontainebleau, towards a place called La Mer de Sable, a site that he represented in two sketches around 1849-50 under the references of the Catalogue Raisonne of artworks by Gustave Courbet published in 1977 : F99 and F100. Jean-Jacques FERNIER"

This painting had a thick old varnish when it was sold in 2010, it was recently cleaned and has regained its pretty original colors

Oil on canvas 40.5 x 32 cms (with 19th century gilded frame, slight restorations, 58 x 49 cms)

Signed in red lower right "G. COURBET"

Very beautiful presentation, on its original canvas, artwork recently fully cleaned, note old restorations visible on the reverse

On the crosspiece of the frame, several annotations "La gorge au loup, Fontainebleau Forest (twice)" - "Attributed to COURBET"

Among the collaborators constituting COURBET's entourage, let us cite for example Cherubino PATA, Marcel Ordinaire, Ernest BIGOT and Hippolyte PRADELLES.

The paintings sold in auctions houses attributed to the collaborators of Gustave COURBET, announced "Courbet and workshop" or "Courbet and collaboration" are negotiated between 5,000 and 30,000 euros depending on the nature of the subjects. An artwork created by Gustave COURBET obviously costs 10 to 20 times more, not to mention masterpieces of course !
