"The Annunciation, Perimeter By Francesco Di Simone Ferrucci (1437-1493, Tuscany, 15th "
As in the marble panel of the Arezzo Cathedral executed by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci, our sculptor here also uses the stylistic expedient of the trefoiled niche to frame the figures. In this case, it is a Virgin seated with the Child on whom the dove of the Holy Spirit descends, surrounded by angels. The architectural tympanum which surmounts it is supported by fluted Corinthian columns. On each side stand Saint Peter and Saint Paul, with the usual attributes of keys and sword. The strong classicism of the taste of late Antiquity, which permeates this relief, suggests a deep knowledge of Roman Antiquity and, therefore, a possible provenance from the Capitol, looking among the sculptors active in the papal sphere towards the end of the Fifteenth century.
