DE BRUYNE, Gustaaf (Malines, 1914 - Poederlee, 1981)
Belgian painter of landscapes, nudes, symbolist scenes, sometimes with a surrealist tendency. Before taking courses at the Mechelen academy, De Bruyne learned to carve wood in a cabinetmaking workshop. From 1932 he studied at the Antwerp Institute of Fine Arts under G. Van De Woestijne. Later, under the influence of his master, he painted allegorical subjects. From 1945, he tended towards surrealism, creating Bruegelian landscapes with a number of small characters. The female nude is also one of his favorite subjects. His technique is refined. Great attention is paid to detail. He was a member of the artistic circle 't Getij. He taught at the Antwerp Academy from 1946 to 1977.
Works at the Museums of Antwerp, Brussels and Mechelen.
