Francisque Edouard Bertier (1840-1925) was born in Paris, he was a pupil of BOUGUEREAU and CABANEL, he painted numerous portraits of English and American high society. Several of his works are conserved in museums and international institutions, such as the National Trust of Scotland, the National Gallery, the Mulhouse museum, Harvard university ... The elegant 28 years old man represented in this portrait is Francisque Edouard Bertier's friend.
