Biography:
Jean AUSCHER is a portrait painter, engraver and illustrator, born August 18, 1896 and died in Paris on December 21, 1985.
Born in Nancy around 1880, he was a student at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. His work was exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries between 1923 and 1933.
His most characteristic work is that of recording "Roaring Twenties" life in 1920s Paris, with scenes in casinos. , gambling clubs and dance halls, evoking the decadence of the “demi-monde”. He also covered the theatrical community with portraits of actors, some in their famous roles, such as Louis Jouvet in "Le Trouhadec indigne" or the clown Grock.
His best-known work appeared in limited edition folios published by the artist himself (Faune des dancings, 1925 and Le Baccara, circa 1926). Many lithographs contained in these collections were enhanced with watercolor.
Later, Auscher illustrated the legal chronicles taken at against the French collaborationist government after the Second World War, including those against Marshal Philippe Pétain, Charles Maurras, and Pierre Laval.
He died in 1950.
