François Louis Lanfant de Metz was born in Sierck (Moselle, France) on August 23, 1814 and died in Le Havre in 1892. He showed his talents as a painter in the workshop of Ary Scheffer (1795-1858), a great painter of scenes from genre of the French Romantic School. François Lanfant de Metz always followed his surname with the words “de Metz”, thus indicating his origin. Metz, being both the closest city and better known than his hometown. The artist is undoubtedly the 19th century French painter who best dealt with the theme of childhood. It depicts carefree and mischievous childhood through playful images of rounds and nursery rhymes. His genre scenes are always full of humor and show his keen sense of observation. From 1843 to 1866, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. This artist practically only executed small formats. Lanfant de Metz's line is precise, he draws attitudes full of truth and life which make these characters so charming.
